Hi
We currently live and own a house in England, and are considering moving to Sweden.
We intend to sell our house in England and use the proceeds to buy a house in Sweden.
In England we do not have to pay tax on the difference between the original purchase price and the final sale price of a house.
Will we have to pay any tax in Sweden if we transfer the proceeds of the house sale to Sweden and use the money to purchase a house in Sweden?
Thank you
Dear Maria S,
If you sell your house in England before you have moved to Sweden you will not have to pay any tax on the profit in Sweden. The transfer of money to Sweden does not cause any tax liability. But you may have to explain the transfer to The Swedish Tax Agency.

Thank you for your reply. Would it be satisfactory for the Swedish Tax Agency if we can provide a copy of the sales contract as explanation for the transfer of the money to the Swedish Tax Agency. If not what else is required to explain where the money comes from?

Hello again,
If you transfer money from another country to a Swedish bank, the bank has to inform the Swedish Tax Agency if the sum is larger than 150 000 SEK. Then the Swedish Tax Agency might ask the person who has transferred the money how he has received it. Most of the times there are no questions. But if there is a copy of the sales contract will be perfect to show.
